Speedway latest! Cheetahs storm to victory on derby day in front of bumper crowd

The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs raced to a convincing 20-point victory in front of a bumper crowd at Oxford Stadium against Wiltshire rivals Swindon Robins Select on Wednesday.

The Robins – absent from British Speedway since 2019 – were on track for the first time in almost four years and travelled in strength with Jason Doyle, Chris Harris and Adam Ellis leading their charge.

But, fresh from victory in Plymouth just 24 hours earlier, the Monarch Cheetahs proved too strong to record a comfortable 55-35 victory with skipper Scott Nicholls racing to another paid maximum.

Sam Masters (10+1) and Lewis Kerr (12) also weighed in with double figure returns while there were paid heat wins for Henry Atkins, Jordan Jenkins and Cameron Heeps. Luke Killeen scored in all bar one of his rides.

Team Manager Peter Schroeck branded the night as a complete team performance.

“The boys have really clicked this week and are starting to show their true potential,” said Schroeck. “We knew a strong start was vital as Swindon looked to have depth towards the end of the meeting.

“But our boys all held their own and used track knowledge to their advantage. Everyone returned with at least paid five, so we can’t ask for more than that.

“Of course, there was a bigger picture to this evening and we hope the travelling Robins fans enjoyed watching the team on track. We sincerely hope the A420 derby can be renewed soon.”

Oxford: Sam Masters 10+1, Cameron Heeps 7+1, Scott Nicholls 11+1, Jordan Jenkins 6, Lewis Kerr 12, Henry Atkins 6+2, Luke Killeen 3+2.

Swindon: Jason Doyle 10, Max Clegg 3, Adam Ellis 5, Dan Thompson 5+1, Chris Harris 8+2, Jack Smith 4+1, Sam Hagon 0.
