The Oxford Stadium - Speedway and Greyhound racing

A multi-purpose sports and events venue

Welcome to Oxford Stadium, a multi-purpose sports and events venue now open!

Based in Cowley just three miles from Oxford city centre, Oxford Stadium first opened in 1939 and hosted speedway and greyhound racing for 73 years before closing in 2012. A hard-fought campaign to return our facility to its former glory reached its conclusion in June 2021 when Kevin Boothby secured a 10-year lease to reopen Oxford Stadium and bring back much-missed sports to the city.

But our regeneration is about much more than greyhound racing, speedway and events. This new era for Oxford Stadium will see it become an accessible venue for all members of the local community through our dedicated social facilities and VIP suites.

Our facilities will also include a wellness hub which will deliver a series of community outreach programmes and educational workshops for all members of the community.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing our journey with you.

Greyhound racing will be the first of our new provisions to relaunch in early 2022.
Race meetings will be held multiple times a week and adhere to the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s strict ‘Rules of Racing’ regulations.

Already, a dedicated team of track staff have been hired to deliver a quality and safe racing surface and £250,000 has been invested to revolutionise our kennel and veterinary facilities.

Dr Polly Smith has been hired to lead our experienced team of qualified vets who will ensure greyhound welfare is at the forefront of our work with care requirements exceeding measures in place for all domestic pet owners.

Motorcycle Speedway will return to Oxford for the first time in 15 years this spring when Oxford Cheetahs and Oxford Chargers race in the British Speedway Championship and National League respectively.

The Cheetahs will be managed by three-times World Speedway Champion and legend of the sport Jason Crump. Seven-times British Champion Scott Nicholls will be captain.

The Chargers will act as Oxford's junior team and act as a direct pathway for riders to develop skills in a professional environment. Race meetings will be held on Wednesday nights.

Stadium HISTORY

Oxford Stadium was built in 1938 and used as a flapping track for local people to race their greyhounds around an oval circuit on selected race days.

The stadium hosted speedway and go-karting until its closure in 2012.

The world-famous Oxford Cheetahs speedway team was founded in 1939 and operated at the stadium until 2007. Legendary riders include Hans Nielsen, Greg Hancock and Simon Wigg.

Greyhound Racing will return too, with the care and welfare of all dogs participating our highest priority.
