With a 500cc engine attached to a motorcycle with no brakes and no gears, speedway is motorsport at its rawest.

Four riders competing over four pulsating laps on bikes powered by methanol with every twist happening in front of your very eyes.

After a 15-year absence, speedway returned to Oxford in April 2022 with the world-famous Cheetahs competing in the Championship while the Chargers race in the National League.

Never attended a speedway meeting? Here, we consider five reasons why you should be trackside in 2022 and experience the fastest sport in town!

No holds barred racing

Every speedway meeting consists of 15 action-packed races – known as ‘heats’ – where riders complete four laps of Oxford Stadium’s shale-based track in an anti-clockwise direction.

Bikes accelerate from the start faster than a Formula One car and reach speeds of up to 60mph by power sliding around corners. Grip generated on the track’s outside line creates fast and furious racing with riders swapping places frequently in the battle for the lead.

Don’t take your eyes off the action at any moment because you can be guaranteed you’ll miss that crucial overtake or bunched first turn!

Support the historic Cheetahs

Oxford Cheetahs is one of world speedway’s most famous club’s.

Founded in 1939, the club has won the British League on five occasions and been home to the sport’s most legendary riders, including Hans Nielsen, Greg Hancock and the late Simon Wigg.

These days, the Cheetahs are managed by three-times world speedway champion Jason Crump and captained by seven-times British Champion Scott Nicholls.
