Romeo Cypher broke the 450-metre track record en route to the £10,000 BGBF British Bred Puppy Cup at Oxford Stadium on Saturday for trainer David Mullins.

The February ’22 pup clocked 26.47 seconds – the fastest time any greyhound has finished a 450m race – to scoop the first Category One competition of the year in eye-catching fashion.

Brothers Keefill Maverick and Keefill Goose – trained by Phil Milner – finished in second and third respectively while Oxfordshire representatives Union Rebel, Beach Bull and Union Blizzard filled the minor placings.

After breaking well from the traps, there was no stopping Romeo Cypher whose victory was the seventh of his career having made his debut at Romford in September.

The performance delighted the Mullins team, including Rhianne Mullins – daughter of trainer David.

She said: “That’s the best he’s performed around Oxford – we’re so happy with the run. He ran well early to build a good lead and just kept going – he was so determined.

“Since his runs at Romford, he has come on a lot. He’s a lot stronger and we’re really excited for the future. It’s amazing to win any Category One competition and gives everyone a high.

“This is a spectacular litter, and we believe there’s more to come.”

Category One greyhound racing returns to Oxford Stadium in March with the historic TV Trophy beginning on Saturday, March 16, and the final following a week later.
