Kevin Boothby revealed he was staggered by the public’s response to ticket sales for the Monarch Oxford Cheetahs’ launch event – and wants to see another full house on April 20.

Tickets for Poole Pirates’ highly anticipated return to Oxford Stadium exactly a week after opening night were launched on Friday morning, a day after sales for the club’s launch event reached full capacity.

Two thousand fans are expected trackside on Wednesday, April 13, when Scunthorpe Scorpions visit in the British Speedway Championship. And Boothby – Oxford Stadium Managing Director – wants more of the same when the world-famous Poole Pirates travel up the A34 a week later.

He said: “We have been overwhelmed by the public’s response both locally and nationally concerning the return of speedway to Oxford Stadium.

“It has really captured people’s imagination, and we’re looking forward to hosting a capacity crowd when we open our doors to the public for the first time in a decade. We understand the frustration of supporters who didn’t manage to purchase a ticket but would encourage those who missed out to join us a week later for Poole Pirates’ visit.

“The excitement in the Cheetahs camp is truly palpable, and it was great to meet the riders and members of management at this week’s press and practice session. We’re expecting demand for Cheetahs’ second home fixture to be equally strong, and we hope the excitement our race nights generate can inspire a new generation of speedway fans.”

Speedway bikes roared around Oxford Stadium for the first time in 15 years on Wednesday at a join press and practice session with all Monarch Cheetahs and Chargers riders and members of management present.

Monarch Cheetahs captain and seven times British Champion Scott Nicholls could not speak highly enough of the racing surface and looks forward to meeting the club’s new and existing fans.

“Speedway is a fantastic family sport,” said Nicholls. “It’s 15 heats of fast, high-octane, methanol fuelled racing on bikes with no brakes that accelerate faster than a Formula 1 car.

“A lot of people in Oxford would have never attended a speedway meeting before. If you are one of the unlucky ones to miss out on being track side on opening night, buy your tickets for Pirates’ visit now and try something new this Easter.

“The support of our fans on the terraces will be huge throughout the season – we’re determined for Oxford’s return to be a success both on and off track, and our supporters will help to make that possible.”
