Family and friends of the late Joey Beauchamp cut the ribbon on the ‘Joey Beauchamp Sports Bar’ at Oxford Stadium on Thursday afternoon in memory of the Oxford United great.

Joey’s father, two brothers and two daughters opened the Cowley venue’s latest space as part of Oxford Stadium’s major regeneration project.

The bar has been named in Joey’s honour and will open to the public for the first time on Monday, July 18, from midday until 5pm. It will also be open for all speedway and greyhound racing fixtures at the stadium and be available to hire for private functions at designated times.

Paul Woodburn, one of Joey’s closest friends, said: “Joey was a greyhound enthusiast and loved nothing more than spending a night at Oxford Stadium in the company of his friends.

“I remember picking him up from Oxford United’s changing room many a time after the full-time whistle had blown on a Saturday and we’d be trackside before you knew it. We enjoyed lots of success on track, but he loved his dogs at home too.

“Joey was a great character and we all dearly miss him. I’m sure many racegoers will join us in raising a glass in his honour when the traps rise on opening night. It was fantastic to officially see the bar open today.”

Kevin Boothby, Managing Director of Oxford Stadium, added: “People remember Joey as a fantastic footballer and back in the day he used to come here as a regular.

“People who know Oxford really well mentioned it to me that it would be a great tribute by naming it The Joey Beauchamp Bar.

“He was a very famous footballer, and his memories live on here.”
