Havana Lover stormed to an extraordinary five-length victory over kennelmates King Ezra and Havana Top Note in the bet365 Hunt Cup at Oxford Stadium on Saturday.
The St Leger champion by Laughil Blake and out of Love Honey chased eventual third Havana Top Note who led the first lap of the 650m contest before asserting her dominance around the final two bends.
Her victory helped Kent-based Elizabeth and Rab McNair land first, second and third in the £10,000 race, which was the couple’s second Category One success at Sandy Lane following FromPostToPillar’s RPGTV Cowley Puppy Collar triumph in October.
A delighted Rab said afterwards the result “blew him away”.
“I thought King Ezra would lead, then either Havana Lover or Top Note would pick him up,” said McNair. “To land first, second and third has just blown my mind. That’s two Category One victories at Oxford now, and hopefully we have another at Towcester very soon!
“I didn’t feel as much pressure building up to the race as I have been feeling lately. It’s been an up and down week for the kennel. But everything has a way of working out, and we let the dogs do the talking on track. We’re just delighted.”
