Greyhound racing made its return to Oxford Stadium on Tuesday morning – 3,517 days after dogs were last seen at the multi-purpose Cowley venue.

The stadium was hosting its first trials session in advance of the opening meeting on Friday, September 2, where more than 2,000 racegoers are expected to attend.

Fifteen trials were held with three dogs programmed for each race.

Two greyhounds – Adeles JohnJoe in Trial Nine and Stefans Jet in Trial 12 – broke the 28 second barrier, both recording times of 27.97 over the 450-metre distance respectively.

Oi Oi Joey, the greyhound purchased in memory of the late Oxford United legend Joey Beauchamp, also experienced the Oxford Stadium track for the first time. And he made a winning start too by beating Rackethall Oscar and Norman in Trial Eight in a time of 28.17.

Kiaran O’Brien, Oxford Stadium Racing Manager, hailed the first trials session as a resounding success.

“It’s been an extraordinary process to get to this stage,” said Kiaran. “To see the greyhounds out on track for the first time in a decade at this historic venue doing what they love really was a sight to behold.

“The track raced beautifully, and full credit must go to our dedicated grounds team who have delivered the safest and most secure racing environment we could ask for.

“Oxford Stadium has the potential to establish itself as the best greyhound racing track in the country. Our facilities coupled with community and sporting provisions plus our commitment to greyhound welfare are all essential to the venue’s short and long-term success.

“The feedback received from our trainers points towards a bright future. We’ll be hosting further trials in the coming days to ensure our launch meeting will provide visitors with the best race night experience.”
